For riders that can wrench a bit, but aren't exactly dirtbike mechanics, many wonder this question.
Question: Should I fix my own dirtbike/Offroad vehicle?
Or should I bring it to a shop?
Short answer: Yes you can fix it yourself, and you should!
But……do you enjoy it? Or do you start to dislike your bike because it gives you headaches?
Best case scenario is to talk to a trustworthy shop that can help you decide whether to repair yourself, depending on the type of repairs currently needed.
GOATS is a Sherco dealer and has experienced techs to diagnose and service dirtbikes of all brands and sizes.
The biggest mistake we see people make is trying to buy cheap parts (especially electrical items off Amazon), then finding out they bought the wrong one. 3 “cheap parts later” its now cost them just as much as a quality part from a reputable brand. On top of that, it's still not installed.
Next they realize it might need a special tool, or it gets installed incorrectly...now we need another new part.
Cheap parts are cheap for a reason.
The labor of a shop may be expensive, but can help narrow issues down quicker. An experienced tech will usually know which products are the best bet for a reliable fix or upgrade.
A trustworthy shop also will ask you questions, and really define what it is you're hoping to accomplish. They can help game plan the most efficient way to get that done.
Sometimes this means a shop suggesting which parts you will need, the tools required, and give you a quick run-down on things to look out for if you do it yourself.
The shop shouldn't try to figure out how to get the most out of a customer, that isn't the game plan of a winning shop!
Best value for money should be the goal, every time.
As hard as it may be at times, a shop may have to say they can't work on something, as it may not be the best fit. At times they may suggest someone else that does that type of work really well.
If it’s a money concern, find a shop that can help you through the basics of finding parts, doing a quick diagnostic to help narrow it down and give you some helpful pointers or videos that can eliminate some unknowns for you.
If it’s a knowledge issue, have a shop diagnose the items and then choose which ones you'd like to tackle yourself, and which ones the shop should.

Moral of the story is, if you have any interest in it, go for it - but it's worth it to go through a shop for parts and guidance. Just sending it with Amazon parts and "Googling" things can get you into trouble fast.
A great shop will have zero issues working through a game plan that fits whichever way you'd like to go with it! Cheers!
